Nantucket Print

Perfect, I thought. Just perfect! Out on the beach one early morning on the Island of Nantucket I saw a couple of these marvelous catboats, on of my favorite sailboats,  coming into view as the fog lifted. There is much more color in fog than one might think and it was a soft, lovely inspiration to paint. A little bit of Nantucket Island history may be found following. Nantucket is an island 30 miles south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in the United States. Together with the small islands of Tuckernuck and Muskeget, it constitutes the town of Nantucket, Massachusetts. Also nicknamed "The Grey Lady" due to the almost regular fog, Nantucket takes its name from a word in an Eastern Algonquian language of southern New England, originally spelled variously as natocke, nantaticut, nantican, and nautican. The meaning of the term is uncertain, although it may have meant in the midst of waters or far away island.
